The impact of spatio-temporal constraints on cursive letter handwriting in children
نویسندگان
چکیده
The study assessed the impact of spatial and temporal constraints on handwriting movements in young children. One hundred children of 5e7 years of age of both genders were given the task of copying isolated cursive letters under four conditions: normal, with temporal, spatial, or spatio-temporal constraints. The results showed that imposing spatio-temporal constraints on handwriting movements affected 5-year-olds’ performance, at least for a subset of letters (those with the simplest shapes). The constraints probably enabled young children to free themselves from the models and helped them to better program their movements. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Examining the relationship between motor assessments and handwriting consistency in children with and without probable developmental coordination disorder.
Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) often experience difficulties in handwriting. The current study examined the relationships between three motor assessments and the spatial and temporal consistency of handwriting. Twelve children with probable DCD and 29 children from 7 to 12 years who were typically developing wrote the lowercase letters "e" and "l" in cursive and printed...
متن کاملReliability and validity of the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive (ETCH-C) using the general scoring criteria.
OBJECTIVES To determine the reliability and aspects of validity of the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive (ETCH-C; Amundson, 1995), using the general scoring criteria, when assessing children who use alternative writing scripts. METHOD Children in Years 5 and 6 with handwriting problems and a group of matched control participants from their respective classrooms were assessed w...
متن کاملLigature Modeling for Online Cursive Script Recognition
Online recognition of cursive words is a difficult task owing to variable shape and ambiguous letter boundaries. The approach proposed in this paper is based on hidden Markov modeling of letters and inter-letter patterns called ligatures occurring in cursive script. For each of the letters and the ligatures we create one HMM that models temporal and spatial variability of handwriting. By networ...
متن کاملEffects of different types of learning on handwriting movements in young children
This experiment aimed at studying the benefits of different types of training (visual, motor, or visual-motor), in comparison to a control group, on 5-year-olds’ performance in a task of writing cursive letters. The visual-motor training was shown to be the most effective training. The efficacy of visual training was clear at the letter quality level, and the impact of the motor training was sh...
متن کاملSpatial-Temporal artificial neurons applied to online cursive handwritten recognition
In this paper we present our latest experiments on the utilization of the recently developed Spatio-Temporal Artificial Neuron (STAN). This neuron has the capability to process asynchronous (continuous) spatio-temporal data sequences and compare them with the help of Hermitian distance. The problem addressed is that of online cursive (non-isolated) handwritten character recognition. We develop ...
